Stryker Hip Implants Litigation

Stryker Corporation is a medical device maker of such products as hip implants, knee replacement systems, bone substitutes and various other medical software. Problems with the company’s hip devices first arose in January 2005. At that time, consumers began complaining of several notable problems with the hip implants, including severe pain around the surgical site, uneven or displaced wearing of the implants, clicking, popping and squeaking joints in hip implants with ceramic bearing components. There were also numerous complaints that the hip implant was improperly fitted, which resulted in bone fracturing. In many instances, these problems have required subsequent revision surgeries to correct the problems. Since that time, many lawsuits have been filed against Stryker regarding its hip implants, including but not limited to Stryker’s Trident Hemispherical and Trident PSL hip replacements.

In response to the growing number of complaints and documented problems with the Stryker hip implants, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”)sent several warning letters to the company. The first such warning was forwarded to Stryker on March 15, 2007 and the second warning was sent on November 28, 2007. Both warning letters referred to consumer complaints with the Trident hip cups and listed such problems as poor fixation and hip function, as well as numerous issues with embarrassing and humiliating squeaking noises. Significantly, the letters cited the need for many consumers to undergo additional revision surgeries to correct the problems with the Stryker hip components, and the November 2007 letter specifically warned that if the problems were not corrected, the FDA would be forced to take action. In response to the warning letters, on January 22, 2008, Stryker announced that it would voluntarily recall two of its hip implant products.
